Who can take this colposcopy training course?

Any OB-GYN residency training graduate of a POGS-accredited institution for training and who is already a diplomate of the Philippine Obstetricial and Gynecological Society (POGS) can signifiy intention to take the course.

How can one become a certified colposcopist?

Step 1 – Attendance to the one day Basic Colposcopy Course lecture series
Step 2 – Attendance to the one day Advanced Colposcopy Course lecture series

Steps 1 and 2 are usually scheduled one after the other. A certificate of attendance is given for each of the course with corresponding CME/CPD units.

Step 3 – Attendance to the Workshop

The workshop is an orientation with lectures on how to perform colposcopy, cryotherapy, and loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). Pictures of normal and abnormal colposcopic findings are also shown. The lectures are followed by practice clinics using hotdogs and ox tongue for demonstration and return-demonstration of cryotherapy and LEEP respectively. A pre and post test are likewise given before and after the lectures.

The remainder of the workshop is spent looking at actual women from the identified PSCPC community. These women must have volunteered for the cervical cancer screening process using visual inspection with acetic acid. The workshop participants perform the VIA on the women. VIA-positive women are then subjected to the colposcopic procedure with the workshop participant performing it and guided by the PSCPC mentor. Each workshop participant is expected to perform at least 2 of these colposcopic procedures. A certificate of attendance is given at the end of the workshop.

Step 4 – Gathering of 100 cases

From the completion of Step 3 and upon signing the conforme, a trainee must have 100 cases for colposcopy within the next 3 years. Cases should have a clear indication for the performance of colposcopy. The performance of the colposcopic procedure must be under the direct supervision of an identified PSCPC mentor in the area where the trainee practices. Each case must be properly documented in the designated PSCPC form, logged, compiled, and countersigned by the mentor. Once completed, the 100 cases are submitted to the certifying board of the PSCPC together with the application form for Step 5.

Step 5 – Taking the exam given by the certifying board

Once the 100 cases and the application have been approved, the trainee can take the certifying exam which is usually given once a year. The exam has both written and practical parts. The certifying board decides on the passing level. Successful examinees are then inducted as regular members of the PSCPC
